The TEF is officially recognized since 2004 by the French Ministry of National Education and assesses the written and oral French language skills of all foreign students applying for undergraduate university enrollment in France.

In other French-speaking countries

The TEF is recognized by many universities and schools, especially in Canada, to certify your level of French as part of the admission procedure. Contact the institution you wish to attend directly: they will tell you the number and type of TEF tests you will have to take.

What is TEF Study in France?Officially recognized since 2004 by the French National Ministry of Education in the context of a first registration for university undergraduate studies, the TEF Études en France assesses your proficiency in oral and written French.

The TEF Study in France (Études en France) is compulsory for any foreign student who wishes to sign up in the first year of an undergraduate program in a French university (Article D. 612-12 of the Education Code).
Who can take it?Candidates must be at least 16 years of age to take the TEF test. Candidates may take the test several times, allowing for a minimum of 30 days between two exam sessions.
What will be assessed?The TEF Study in France consists of 4 compulsory tests:

Reading comprehension: 60 min – 50 questions
Oral comprehension: 40 min – 60 questions
Written expression: 60 min – 2 subjects to be covered
Vocabulary and syntax: 30 min – 40 questions

Candidates must pass both the written and oral sections of the TEF and obtain 315 points, equivalent to 14/20 in the written expression section to be admissible to the first year of an undergraduate degree.
